Ukulele

There’s something about guitars, there just so big, you know what I mean? You’re just like ‘Ugh!’  It just seems so overwhelming. And the ukulele is, like, the opposite of overwhelming.

Stringed instruments are probably the most common to travel with. They are not too big and can be easily stored. They are great to jam with around a campfire with friends.

Ukuleles are very common among roadschooling families because of their size, price, and convenience.

They are much smaller than a guitar so they can be stored in more places. They don’t weigh much and are very portable.

As with any instrument there are different price brackets. Our family purchased two ukuleles when we first started roadschooling, even though we aren’t very musical and no one knew how to play.

We got them from Amazon, not knowing anything about the quality until we got them. We tried out two different sizes and brands. The larger one cost a little more and the smaller one came with free downloadable lessons.

The lessons turned out to be really good and we learned several chords, how to read the chords, how to tune the instrument, and basics on how to play.

For the price we paid, I was quite impressed with the quality. In the past I’ve had many instruments and I’ve had toys shaped like instruments. There is a big difference. Both ukuleles from Amazon were good quality and stayed in tune while playing.

They have now traveled the country and quite honestly they do collect dust more than they get played. But when we are around friends, they always find their way off the wall and into someones hands to entertain us with their music.
