What is the Thing?

Ever been driving down the interstate, and see sign after sign for some crazy roadside attraction?  This place certainly fits the bill.  It really isn’t all that interesting, but it is a good stop to break up a long drive through the desert and get a snack.

What is it?

The Thing is a roadside attraction in Arizona along Interstate 10.  This truck stop dubbed “Mystery of the Desert” has billboards stretching for miles and miles in both directions allegedly as far as LA and New Orleans.   This array of advertising tries to convince you to stop and see what The Thing actually is.

Good to know:

*Located just off I-10 at Ext 322 between Benson and Willcox Arizona.
*Admission is $1 for adults and $.75 for kids.
*It’s a full truck stop, with fuel, food and a gift shop full of interesting souvenirs, t-shirts and other random wares.
*The gas station is 24 hours, but the exhibits are only open 6:30am to dark.  Best to call for info if you’re planning a visit.
*The Museum is in 3 large corrugated sheds that loop around the back of the truck stop.
*Plenty of parking for any size of vehicle.

Well, we still don’t know what The Thing is, and don’t know if we got any value for the price of admission.  We did however get to stretch our legs, grab a snack and check out some weirdness in the Arizona Desert!

About Fummins Family

In 2016 a family hit the road with 5 of their children. They were going to travel the country in a Ford Excursion that had a cummins engine. A ford with a cummins, hence the name, Fummins. Ford+Cummins=Fummins. It was going to be a fummins family roadtrip. Within 3 months they decided that the travel trailer they were pulling wasn't working well for their family. They needed more space so they upgraded to a fifth wheel. It's not easy to pull a fifth wheel with an excursion, so they had to bid farewell to the fummins. They talked about changing the name of theirs travels, but decided to hold onto it for a while longer. They already had a website, blog, youtube, instagram and facebook. After 2 more years they decided to make the switch to Roadschool. Here they will share some of the old posts and video. It may be old information, but it's still just as good...at least most of it!
