And Then it’s Spring

I love this book written by Julie Fagliano. I remember many long winters that would end with melted snow and lots of mud. Playing outside always meant a bath and a load of laundry would soon be needed.

I was always excited to start gardening and it always seemed to take forever for those first few specks of green to come poking through the soil.

We’ve been to Joshua Tree National Park many times. It is one of our family’s favorite national parks. There are great hiking trails, granite boulders to climb on, amazing cactus gardens and beautiful scenery. While I do love it there and can appreciate the beauty of the desert, I also have a love of lush green forests and moist riparian areas filled with ferns, mushrooms and lots of color.

After years of vising Joshua Tree I was most surprised by this last visit. As soon as I looked around I felt like I was living in this children’s book. I had grown accustomed to the brownness of the desert, but as I looked around, there was green, all around green.

And flowers everywhere. People had told me that the desert is gorgeous when it’s in bloom and it took me almost 40 years to see it for myself. Everywhere you looked everything had come to life. No more brown, no more dust. There were flowers as far as the eye could see. And then it’s spring.
